Non-surgical Spinal Decompression in St George

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment option that increases the spaces between spinal discs. Discs can become compressed due to various injuries and ailments, including herniated discs, sciatica and posterior facet syndrome.

Herniated Discs

Herniated discs occur when one or more discs in the back bulge out of place. This puts pressure on the surrounding nerve roots and soft tissues. Unfortunately, discs are not able to heal like other areas of the body because they are bloodless. Instead, they are filled with a clear liquid that contains vital nutrients. One of the ways to heal herniated discs is through non-surgical spinal decompression. By increasing the spaces between the vertebrae, the discs are given the room they need to retract and re-inflate which reduces pain and heals the injury.

Posterior Facet Syndrome

The posterior joints are located behind the vertebrae. Over time, they can wear out or be affected by osteoarthritis. Both of these conditions cause the cartilage between the joints to become thin or disappear entirely. Symptoms of posterior facet syndrome include lower back pain and loss of range of motion. Spinal decompression helps ease the pain of worn spinal joints by increasing the spaces between the joints so that they do not rub together.

Sciatica

Sciatica is the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which is one of the longest nerves in the body. When the discs are compressed, they can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing intense lower back and leg pain. In severe instances, it can impede the individual's ability to walk. Spinal decompression helps sciatica by removing pressure off the nerves. This helps reduce pain and restore mobility.

Spinal Decompression with our Chiropractor in St George

Non-surgical spinal decompression from our chiropractor in St George is performed on a mechanized table that is designed to gently stretch sections of the spine. During your appointment, you will be attached to the table's pulley system via a wide, padded belt and asked to lay on the table. Our chiropractor will adjust the table so that the session meets your specific needs and start the treatment.

Your treatment is monitored via a computer than senses the pressure placed on your spine and your spine's reaction to the pressure. If adjustments to the pressure are needed, the computer does it automatically.

Sessions typically last between 30 and 45 minutes. Most patients find the procedure relaxing, and there is no recovery time needed.
