Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic

spine

If you want to get to the bottom of a chronic or acute health problem, sometimes you have to start at the top of the spinal column. A small bone called the Atlas plays a pivotal role -- literally -- in your overall spinal and musculoskeletal balance. When this bone is not perfectly aligned with the skull that it supports, pain, stress and other serious side effects may occur throughout the body. The good news is that the proper treatment to correct this misalignment can have equally profound positive effects. That treatment is known as Atlas Orthogonal Technique, and we're proud to offer it to our patients here at My Family Chiro.

The Atlas is the first or topmost vertebral bone in your spine, joining the head to the rest of the spinal column. Under normal circumstances, the Atlas fits evenly underneath a part of the skull called the occiput. This allows the head to sit straight on the neck, which in turn helps the rest of the body maintain a nicely symmetrical vertical balance. Unfortunately, accidents, sports injuries, or even physical stresses imparted during childbirth can push the Atlas and the occiput out of alignment with each other, causing the skull to sit on the neck at a slight angle.

Even if you're unaware that you have an Atlas misalignment, you may be feeling its effects all too keenly. Neck strain and pressure on the cervical nerve roots may result in headaches, migraines, neck pain and other localized discomforts. But the difficulties don't end at the neck. an upper cervical misalignment can throw your entire body out of balance, potentially causing joint pain, premature joint wear, muscle strain and systemic nerve dysfunction. The latter problem can play a major role in disorders such as:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Herniated discs
  • Sciatica
  • ....and other debilitating ailments.

Our chiropractor, Dr. Tom Johnson, has extensive training and experience in a technique specially designed to resolve this form of misalignment. Atlas Orthogonal Technique involves the use of incredibly small and subtle adjustments to this critical area. A probe placed against the neck emits small but effective vibrations, producing just enough precisely-targeted force to safely shift the Atlas back into its proper alignment. Once the balance between your skull, your neck and the rest of your spine has been restored, nerve pressure and muscle strain will be relieved, giving your body a chance to heal itself naturally.
